Tsukishima, Tokyo
Cook it yourself. Share it hot.
Monjayaki is Tokyo's old-town comfort food, grilled right at your table. Chop, stir, and scrape it off the iron plate with friends.
The griddle is yours
At a monja restaurant, a hot teppan iron plate sits in the middle of your table. Staff bring the ingredients in a bowl, and you do the rest. It is messy, loud, and a lot of fun, and first-timers always get help.

What goes in the bowl, and where it comes from
Tsukishima sits a short hop across the river from Tsukiji and close to Toyosu Market, the heart of Tokyo's seafood trade. Add the cabbage that forms the base, and you have most of what goes in the bowl.
Toyosu Market
Tokyo's wholesale fish market, where squid, shrimp and scallops arrive fresh every morning.
Tsukiji
The famous outer market streets, still full of specialty stores for dried seafood, bonito and seasonings.

Crunchy cabbage
Coarsely cut cabbage is the base of every monja and gives it its sweetness.
Old Tokyo on Monja Street
Tsukishima is a small island neighborhood built in the Meiji era. Along Nishinaka-dori, known as Monja Street, narrow alleys and family-run restaurants keep the easygoing mood of shitamachi, Tokyo's old downtown.
